Training your dog to walk on a leash is essential for every dog owner.

If your dog isn’t keen on a leash, it can seem like a daunting task.

But don’t worry!

I’m gonna give you the 5 simple steps to leash train a dog or puppy!

Step# 1

Introduce your dog to their harness and leash. Don’t put the harness on until your dog is comfortable with it.

Same with the leash, don’t attach it until your dog is comfortable enough with it around them.

Take it slow and provide positive associations with the harness, such as love, praise and treats.

Step# 2

Teach a trigger word to associate the harness, leash and going for a walk with something positive such as a treat.

Put your dog’s harness on, attach the leash and use the trigger word, such as “walk” or “OK” and give them a treat.

Step# 3

Take baby steps. With the harness on, take a few steps back and give them the trigger word again. When your dog walks over to you, give them another treat.

Continue to practice this a few steps at a time.

Step# 4

Practice Inside before going outside. Go from room to room as your dog gets used to wearing the harness and having the leash attached. Continue offering treats as your pup becomes more accustomed to the leash being attached.

Step# 5

Take it outside! Start small in your yard before going any further. All the sights, sounds and smells will be overwhelming to your pup at first, so be patient and continue practicing a few feet at a time and giving treats.
